artist spotlight / pantone smoothies

Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend, enjoying the last few weeks of summer. While it's starting to feel like fall, we won't be done with summer until late September and I'm holding on tight until the season is officially over.

Nothing says summer like bright colors, ripe fruit and refreshing smoothies, so I was excited to discover the Pantone Smoothies series by Hedvig Astrom Kushner, a "delicious color experiment" that matches smoothies to Pantone swatches. Kushner, a Swedish art director working in NYC, realized that making smoothies was similar to mixing paint and wanted to see if it was possible to color-match smoothies to any particular Pantone swatch.

Pantone Smoothie 644

2/3 cup of almond milk
½ cup blueberries
½  bananas
1/3 tsp spirulina

INSTRUCTIONS: Mix it all together, add ice. Spare a few berries for garnish.

As a huge lover of color and Pantone swatches myself (see my Color Profile posts on blush, citron, fuchsia and indigo), I love how experimental and playful this series is. It reminds me of another really strong Pantone series from last year; Food Art Pairings from Dschwen.

While summer is still here and the weather is warm, experiment with your own smoothies! Think you can color match to your favorite Pantone color?

bright & punchy palette to beat the winter blues...

Hello and happyyyyyyy Friday! I'm really looking forward to the weekend for several reasons, but reason #1 is because I get to pick up my back-from-the-dead Mac! Thanks to several trips to the Genius Bar & Microcenter, my computer is resurrected and will live to see a few more months - if I'm nice to it. My computer bombed right as the new year hit, and all of my good intentions to blog regularly went right out the window. Now I will have no excuses!

With a new year comes new sources of inspiration, and I keep going back to a few images I found on Pinterest. The overall color palette is so vivid, fresh and punchy, and if I stare at the images long enough, I might be able to convince myself it's springtime. I also can't resist a pink & red combo of any kind, considering my favorite heart-filled holiday is right around the corner. In an effort to beat the winter blues, put away your Vitamin D pills... here is your dose of (visual) sunshine for the day!

Now, do you feel like your seasonal depression is easing away, just for a minute? Here's hoping :)

Have yourself a bright & cheery weekend! Enjoy!

color profile / blush

Oh blush, you feminine little lady, you. While this color is usually reserved for the spring, it's sticking around this time of year and is having what some would call a "moment". Each year there is a new color palette for each season, and while it can become annoying (and pricy!) to buy a new piece in a new palette seasonally, have no fear... just dig out your spring clothes that happen to be "blush" and toss them on! Pair blush with deeper colors like navy, charcoal, burgundy, hunter green... the list goes on. As long as you balance the ladylike tones with deeper fall colors, you're set. And now, to window (or computer/phone screen?) shop...
